Going once...twice...sold

Matthew 6: 19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

These past several weeks have been extremely difficult for my mother- in-law. My uncle Bob died a few months ago and it has been her sole responsibility to manage and liquidate the complete estate of her only brother.

Over the years I had seen uncle Bob's life and family decline. I had officiated his sons funeral, his wife, and eventually uncle Bob. I had been their minister for years. He and Aunt Nell spoke to me on numerous occasions about their final instructions, things you don't enjoy talking about but weigh heavy on the minds of the elderly.

This Saturday was a culmination event of Uncle Bobs life and legacy. It was a living object lesson I will never forget. Under a big top tent on the front lawn of his property was a massive crowd of eager auctioneers gawking at as all his belongings waiting to place their bid.

I watched in amazement for hours as people left with all his things. Someone drove away in his car. An old lady loaded up his china and curio. Children and old men dug through all his tools. Somebody even bought the house. In a matter of hours all the worldly things he had invested in were gone; in the possession of someone else. By the end of the day it had all disappeared. Like a vapor the last vestige of his life had vanished.

We are only stewards of the things we have on this earth. In the end, what is not bartered or sold will eventually decay and rust. We leave with nothing. The only thing that we posses in eternity is what Christ said are treasures in heaven.

In Webster's dictionary a synonym for worldly is temporal. Heavenly treasures can't be temporal, however scripture does speak of streets of gold, gates of pearl, walls of Jasper and so on. But that is not heavens treasure. Those things mean nothing there. If the things that mean everything here mean nothing there then perhaps what means so little to some here will mean everything there.

We all would do well to take into account what matters to the God of heaven. Our lives can be a filled with the extravagance of every worldly pleasure. We can have every profligate possession, but one thing is for certain; it will ALL DISAPPEAR. One day, it will all belong to another. Temporal possessions are just that; temporary.

Do not become blinded by the world and it's glitter. Eternal issues have nothing to do with temporal things. We can be so driven to posses that spiritual matters are ignored and neglected.

Luke 12: 18 So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 20 But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?'

When we stand before him his inquiry will be of our soul. Have you invested in eternity!
